CADAL and the Argentine Office of Konrad Adenauer Stiftung, organized at the headquarters of the Czech Embassy in Buenos Aires , the show of the Documental "Prague Summit for Democracy in Cuba".

Alternative futures in Cuba
On Thursday, March 6, CADAL organized in its office in Buenos Aires , a video-conference with Professor Juan J. López on "Alternative Futures of Cuba". A reduced group of diplomats and journalists took part in the event. López is consultant in Transitions at Centro de Estudios para una Opción Nacional at Cuban Democratic Directorate. He has a Ph. D. in Political Science from University of Chicago . Among his academic publications are Democracy Delayed: The Case of Castro's Cuba ( Baltimore , MD : The Johns Hopkins University Press, 2002).

CADAL invited as associated institute to Proyecto Plataforma Democrática

The Center for the Opening and Development of Latin America (CADAL) was invited to be an associated institute to Proyecto Plataforma Democrática, a consortium formed by Instituto Fernando Henrique Cardoso (San Pablo, Brazil), Centro Edelstein de Investigaciones Sociales (Río de Janeiro, Brazil) and Fundación Democracia y Desarrollo (Santiago de Chile). The objective of Proyecto Plataforma Democrática is to create a plural space dedicated to strengthen Latin America's capability of taking part in an active and autonous way in the process of globalization through the production of knowledge, public debate and dialogue between diffferent sectors in society.

CADAL urges not to vote in favor of Ziegler's nomination at UN

In a letter sent to the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of seven democratic countries member of the UN Council of Human Rights, the Center for the Opening and Development of Latin America (CADAL) expressed its concern with regards to the possible election of Jean Ziegler next March 26, 2008, candidate proposed by Switzerland as member of the Consulting Committee at the Human Rights Council. CADAL is concerned because Mr. Ziegler's nomination does not follow the requirement of honesty, indepedence and impartiality required for that job.

CADAL opposes Marino's designation as ambassador in Cuba
Regarding the Presidential proposal of Juliana Marino as Argentine ambassador in Cuba, Gabriel Salvia, Chairman of the Center for the Opening and Development of Latin America (CADAL) stated that “it would be a backlash in the relations with the island for the person chose has a well known history in the defense of the remaining dictatorship in the region”. Moreover, Salvia said that “Marino's designation represents a virtual “death sentence” for Hilda Morejón, mother of the Cuban doctor, Hilda Molina”.

CADAL proposes to organize a reception in Argentine embassies every March 24
In a letter sent to the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Argentina, Jorge Taiana, CADAL proposed that department that every March 24 a reception should be held in every diplomatic representation of Argentina abroad with the most important local referents in the promotion and research in human rights.
