Petition to the EU for the full inclusion and participation of the Cuban independent civil society within the framework of the Political Dialogue and Cooperation Agreement

The Civil Society organizations belonging to the Coalition for Freedom of Association have formally submitted a letter to Mr. Josep Borrell, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and to Mr. Eamon Gilmore, European Union Special Representative for Human Rights. The petition is based on the policies and guidelines established by the EU for the relations with civil society around the world, which are established in the “COMMUNICATION FROM THE COMMISSION TO THE EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT, THE COUNCIL, THE EUROPEAN ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL COMMITTEE AND THE COMMITTEE OF THE REGIONS - The roots of democracy and sustainable development: Europe's engagement with Civil Society in external relations” of September 12th, 2012, as well as in the wording and spirit of the Agreement itself.

Petition in response to the repression of social protest in Cuba

Fifteen organizations, members of the Coalition for Freedom of Association, sign a request to Ms. Michelle Bachelet, United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights; the European External Action Service; and to the European Ambassadors for Human Rights (Germany, Spain, Estonia, Finland, France, Lithuania, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Sweden and the European Union): “We call on the international community to take concrete measures demanding that the Cuban government put an end to the repression, arbitrary detentions and persecution of peaceful demonstrators who are peacefully demanding changes to their undemocratic government”.

Restrictions and threats to freedom of association in Latin America

This activity was organized by the Coalition for Freedom of Association, with the testimonies of civil society leaders in four countries of the region: Laritza Diversent (Cuba), Rafael Uzcátegui (Venezuela), Lilliam Arrieta (El Salvador) and Ana Lucía Ixchiú Hernández (Guatemala) .⁠ The meeting was opened by Gerardo Berthin (Freedom House) and Inés Pousadela (CIVICUS) and Maricarmen Plata, Secretary of Access to Rights and Equity of the OAS, participated in the closing.
