At the beginning of 2004 Václav Havel (1936-2011) recorded this video for its projection at a conference in Buenos Aires organized by CADAL and the Konrad Adenauer Foundation on the first anniversary of "The Black Spring of Cuba", the repressive wave in which 75 democratic leaders in Cuba, including twenty independent journalists, were arrested, tried in summary trials and sentenced to long prison terms. In September of that same year, Havel organized the Prague Summit for Democracy in Cuba which brought together, in the capital of the Czech Republic, representatives and ministers of the European Union and Latin America, former heads of state, leaders of non-governmental organizations, parliamentarians from Europe and Latin America and representatives of the Cuban civic movement (which was attended by two members of CADAL). With this video that remains in full force, we remember who would turn 85 today and whose legacy CADAL strives to keep alive.
