One Year after 9/11: Art and Resistance in Cuba

We were at the Legislative Palace of Uruguay, together with Carolina Barrero -activist and art historian, Tamara Taraciuk Broner -Interim Director for the Americas of Human Rights Watch, Gloria Rodríguez -Senator of the Republic of Uruguay, and Matilde Antía -Mayor of the Municipality CH, a few days after a year since Cubans took to the streets to make themselves heard, asking for freedom, better living conditions, medicine, food and dignity. We were also accompanied by Diana Arévalo - Consultant in Freedom of Artistic Expression of CADAL, in moderation. The right to freedom of expression and peaceful protest are NOT a crime. Cuban independent filmmaker Miguel Coyula participated in BAFICI

From April 20 to 29, filmmaker Miguel Coyula took part in the Buenos Aires Independent Film Festival, with the introduction of his fiction feature film Corazón Azul. Then, from April 29 to May 1, he was invited to FANTASPOA in Porto Alegre. For the first time in the history of BAFICI an independent Cuban filmmaker takes part in the festival.

Cuba and Argentina: the experience within feminist activism

Feminist activism in Latin America has increased its relevance and visibility during this age. Proceeding this time, referents from Argentina and Cuba talked about their main struggles and challenges. We have the presence of María Matienzo (Cuba), Hilda Landrove (Cuba), Pola Oloixarac (Argentina), and Mercedes Funes (Argentina), who pleaded: State violence against women activists; femicides; limitations imposed on women in the workplace, glass ceiling; ideological appropriation of certain issues on the feminist agenda; and the rights of women in law and practice. The virtual conversation moderation was in command of Cecilia Noce, Coordinator of the Project for the Defense of the Freedom of Artistic Expression, CADAL.

Different perspectives were analyzed and quantitative data were presented by Tomás Páez and Jorge Duany. In addition, Carlos Aníbal Alonso shared his personal experience. Likewise, Enrique del Risco, Melba Escobar and Carolina Amoroso analyzed stories of Venezuelan migrants in their countries. ⁠ The moderation was in charge of Magdalena López, specialist in culture and literature in the Hispanic Caribbean.

Experiences and challenges of data gathering in Cuba

Bárbara Maceda –Project Inventory-, Norgés Rodriguez –Yucabyte-, Laritza Diversent –Cubalex- and Mario Lleonart –Instituto Patmos- were the exhibitors of this virtual event. Based on the experience of the four organizations, the difficulties and challenges surrounding access to information in Cuba were analyzed. Latin American experts in open data participated actively, through very valuable contributions: Eduard Borregón (Power - Mexico), Juan Manuel Casanueva (SocialTic- Mexico), Ana Carolina Alpírez (Eye with my Pisto - Guatemala), Juliana Galvis - Datasketch (Colombia) and Romina Colman (LNData - Argentina). The event was moderated by Juan Ignacio Belbis (ILDA - Argentina). AprilVarious perspectives were analyzed and there were quantitative data presented by Tomás Páez and Jorge Duany. CADAL held a virtual presentation about the book written by the Italian historian and academic CADAL's advisor, Loris Zanatta, in a dialogue with the historian and Academic Director of CADAL, Sabrina Ajmechet, and the Cuban historian and political activist Manuel Cuesta Morúa. In his book, recently published in Argentina, Zanatta explains how the Latin populism of anti-liberal roots, communism, and the Christian utopia merged in Castro's ideology, including how he marked the life of Cubans under a totalitarian state and a subsistence economy.

The Cuban lawyer and activist Laritza Diversent, Executive Director of Cubalex, currently in exile in the United States, visited Buenos Aires between March 7 and 14, 2020. During her stay in the city, she met with a group of National Deputies, the authorities of the Buenos Aires Bar Association, representatives of the Thomson Reuters Foundation, participated in a workshop with other activists from the region and in a public conference on challenges to human rights activism in Latin America. During her stay in the capital of Argentina, Diversent was interviewed by Clarín and Infobae.

Within the framework of its 17° anniversary, the Center for the Opening and Development of Latin America (CADAL) organized a conference at the Feir’s Park Hotel, in Buenos Aires. Among the exhibitors of the event were José Miguel Vivanco, Director of Human Rights Watch's Americas división; Laritza Diversent, Cubalex’s Executive Director; Marino Alvarado Betancourt, PROVEA’s Research Coordinator, and Natalie Southwick, CPJ's South and Central Americas Program Coordinator. Sabrina Ajmechet, CADAL’s Academic Council Director, was the chairperson, while Brian Schapira, CADAL’s Institutional Relations Director, was in charge of the opening.

The Cuban historian, socialdemocratic political activist and Ion Ratiu Prize 2016 visited Buenos Aires, Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Santiago de Chile, Montevideo and Lima, giving lectures, interviews to the media and meetings with intellectual and political leaders. He was received in San Pablo by Fernando H. Cardoso, former president of Brazil, and in Santiago by Ricardo Lagos, former President of Chile.
