CADAL nominated the Cuban Manuel Cuesta Morúa to the Lech Walesa award for democratic activism

The award will be presented for the seventh time by Lech Walesa himself at a ceremony in Gdansk, Poland, and the winner receives a certificate of recognition, a statuette and a financial recognition of $ 100.000.

The program of International Democratic Solidarity of CADAL, Puente Democrático, nominated Manuel Cuesta Morúa, spokesman of Arco Progresista of Cuba, to the Lech Walesa award for democratic activism 2014. The prize was established in 2008 to honor and support the activism of individuals, institutions and social movements, which promote the respect for Human Rights and the cooperation between nations.

The award will be presented for the seventh time by Lech Walesa himself at a ceremony in Gdansk, Poland, and the winner receives a certificate of recognition, a statuette and a financial recognition of $ 100.000.

The Arco Progresista party was officially established with the initiative of Manuel Cuesta Morúa in 2008 with the intention of assembling social democratic organizations, till then scattered in and outside Cuba. In that year the Social Democratic Coordinator of Cuba, the Cuba's Socialist Democratic Current and the People’s party, decided to found the party to unite the Cuban Left. On July 20 of 2008 the first party convention took place, where was ratified that it belongs to the tradition of “liberal socialism and Christian socialism, merged into a center-left party, able to offer a better alternative of democratic change and stability for the present and the future of the Cuban nation".

The winner will be selected by a jury headed by former Polish president Lech Walesa and which, furthermore, includes Stanislav Shushkevich, former president of the Supreme Court of Belarus; Jan Krzysztof Bielecki, former Prime Minister of Poland; Bernard Kouchner, ex Foreign Minister of France; W?adys?aw Bartoszewski, ex Foreign Minister of Poland; Emil Constantinescu, former president of Rumania; Rita Suessmuth, former president of the Bundestag; and Zbigniew Jagie??o, head of the PKO Bank Polski.

Among the previous winners are activists as Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, former president of Brazil; King Abdullah Bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, of Saudi Arabia; the Belarusian dissident Alexander Balatsky and the Russian businessman Mikhail Khodorkovsky among others.
