The Day Mr. K died
International customs, Buenos Aires airport, Argentina, noon, october 27. I turn on my cell phone and the message "Kirchner dead" appears. It takes me a while to fully grasp it, and when I do, I look around and begin to feel a mixture of tense calm and bewilderment among the customs officials. A lot of things run through my head during these minutes. It had been a long time since I had felt this particular sense of contained crisis that I have experienced so many times in this country.

CADAL proposes the Cuban disident Guillermo Fariñas to the International Award of Human Rights Emilio F. Mignone
Emilio Mignone heroically fought together with few people against the Argentine military dictatorship (1976-1983), while the Cuban regime helped dictator Jorge Rafael Videa to block the resolution condemning Argentina in Geneva for human rights violation. This is why, what better way to make a homage to Mignone than to award someone who is currently facing in a peacefull and brave manner a totalitarian regime that is still in power since more than half a century and which government was a known accomplice of the Argentine military dictatorship.

Claim of political opening in Cuba after the announcement of the release of political prisoners
The initiative arosed after the recent announcement of the release of political prisoners in Cuba and for considering this fact as an opportunity to ask again the government of that country "to give way to the guarantees of a democratic system and open the flows of expression of its people". In that sense, the Declaration states that a first step would be "that the Cuban government recognize the right to freedom of association and expression in its country, erasing the legal dispositions that restrict and oppress the excercise of those fundamental rights".

CADAL presented Minister Timerman with eight recommendations of foreign policy and human rights, oriented to the fulfillment of the first of the strategic foreign policy objectives of Argentina. On this regard, CADAL stated that the Argentine Minister that these initiatives are absolutely in accordance with the article he published and signed on January 23, 2004 in the magazine Debate where he was the director: "The past of Argentina puts us on the obligation of excercizing a role of leadership that very few countries can try to occupy. For instance, in the struggle agains human rights violations and in the active solidarity with those opressed. Since we have been victims we must not forget the current victims".

On probation: the release of political prisoners in Cuba
Immediately one can listen to the optimistic readings on political changes in Cuba, as if ignoring the repressive regime's skill to hold in power for more than half a century. However, so long as first generation human rights are considered a crime, nothing will change in that country and those who are being released can be sent back to prison anytime.

Red Puente Democrático Latinoamericano awarded Omar Rodríguez Saludes, Ricardo González Alfonso and Guillermo Fariñas with the 2010 Award to Freedom of Expression in Cuba
The Cuban government is a declared enemy of free speech. To exercise it in the island implies being brave and assuming huge risks. To highlight the work to the Cubans that, in spite of the big obstacles, try to express themselves freely and allow their fellow citizens to have access to independent information and opinions, Red Puente Democrático Latinoamericano (Latin American Democratic Bridge Network) has created the Award to Freedom of Expression in Cuba.

Undoubtedly, the initiative of Representative Abrevaya is very laudable, since Robert Cox was an emblematic figure denouncing the abuses during the last Argentine military dictatorship and besides he represents a great example of intellectual honesty in the defense of Human Rights. Latin American Tendencies
The most serious crisis has taken place in Central America, specifically in Honduras – The global economic crisis, which was unleashed in the United States around September 2008 and soon spread out to the rest of the world, didn’t affect the region in a direct way – The regional economy will already start to recover towards the beginning of next year, and those countries which adopt a more sensible economic policy, like Peru, Brazil or Chile, and probably Mexico, will do that even before and more vigorously – The rise to power of a new American president, the Democrat Barack Obama, also contributed to the creation of a relatively relaxed atmosphere in the political field – The left-turn of the region is reaching an end: with Argentina, Uruguay, Chile, Brazil, Peru, Colombia and Mexico in a clearly distinct position, the expansion of populist policies already turns out to be impossible.

The Honduran Coup is Still a Coup: But Where Was Everybody Before?
Let me say upfront, unequivocally: what occurred on June 28, 2009, in Honduras was a coup and should be condemned for the violation of constitutional, democratic rule that it is. And unlike the street coups that removed Presidents Gonzalo Sánchez de Lozada (Bolivia) or Lucio Gutiérrez (Ecuador), this one was positively 1970s-style retrograde: the marching of military officers into President José Manuel Zelaya Rosales’ residence, his forced removal (or kidnapping as he called it) at gun point.

The ''model'' in the provinces
This document intends to analyze the functioning of the “economic model” in the provinces, reflecting on the political impact which the current economic crisis could have there. The leading argument is that, since the country overtook the 2002 crisis, the provincial governments adopted a pro-cyclic model that is based upon a constant increase of public spending and public sector employment, which will enforce a cutback on expenditures, starting on June 28th.

The futile obsession of total control
It is paradoxical that Argentina, being a country with an economic history in which these events have been repeated ad nauseam and with awful results, still insists in this model. It would be very useful for the government to look at some of its neighbors, where progressive and center-left leaders have demonstrated to have learned from history and today navigate with relative comprehensiveness the stormy waters of the global economic crisis.

On Diplomatic Commitment to Human Rights
Committed diplomacy is a problematic concept. Even though its exact definition is elusive, it is a practice that is backed by sufficient historical evidence to be recognized internationally. However, that does not subtract from the fact that the acts of diplomats committed to human rights beyond their call of duty are a scarce minority.

Conceptual Errors of the “President of all the Argentineans”
The most alarming issue within the President’s speech is her conception of economics: “Economics – as you all know - is, precisely, to administer with the disposable resources and the contributions at hand. Always within economy it occurs that what some people receive is taken from others, because the only one who could multiply fish and bread was Jesus Christ, the rest has to make decisions based on the disposable resources.”

21st Century Slavery
As a sort of contemporary slaves, we, the Cuban people in the middle of the 21st century, do not only depend on government permissions to leave or to return to our country, but we are also constantly confronted with the violation of our right to free movement, as the permissions are granted arbitrarily, they are delayed or refused, causing a deep grief within thousands of innocent families, who, paralyzed by their fear, are unable to claim for the respect of their basic rights.

Cristina Left in Cuba What Little Credibility She Had For An Honest Defense of Human Rights
Kirchnerism has exploited the issue of human rights politically, and lacks the most minimal concern for the subject. Cristina's trip to Cuba leaves no doubt about it, especially when, to top it off, she was received by the elderly dictator Fidel Castro, and had the delicateness of considering that event “a distinction for the entire Argentinean people”.

Horacio Reyser named Director of CADAL's Business Council
The main objective of the Business Council will be to serve as a link between CADAL and the business sector while at the same time feed the organization identifying the most worrying matters of the national realities to submit them to objective analysis and research. In turn this will help to form civic conscience that can then be turned into concrete actions of government, legislators, judges, citizens and businessmen. The new Director of CADAL's Business Council is an associate of Southern Cross and holds an Industrial Engineer degree from Instituto Tecnológico de Buenos Aires (ITBA).

Press Freedom and Economic Development in Latin America 2008
The economy Nobel Prize winner Amartya Sen revolutionized the concept of development by referring to it as "human development". This is how liberty became a central element of the process of development. Following this path, today many authors vigorously defend freedom of the press as an elementary base for development.

Economic decisions that can’t be politized
The major impact of peronism was always registered in the field of politics, as a heritage of the great capacity demonstrated by its founder in this area. But as also in many other areas, a disproportionate force in one sense always has to pay a price in another sense.
