Artists in exile

As a result of the joint venture with Freemuse arises the initiative «Artists in exile», a podcast produced entirely by CADAL, focused on the uprooting of Latin American artists, managers and creators. They are stories that tell, in first person, what it means to be forced to leave the country of origin indefinitely, for reasons of political harassment and censorship. The main character of the first episode is Régulo Pachano, who served for 28 years as president of the Centro de Arte de Maracaibo Lía Bermúdez, in Venezuela; was dismissed and currently resides in Buenos Aires.

Since November 2019, the Center for the Opening and Development of Latin America (CADAL) has partnered with Freemuse, a Danish NGO, to monitor and document violations to freedom of artistic expression in Latin America.

We understand that cultural manifestations have the capacity to shake up entrenched social structures and make those in power uncomfortable. They function as a thermometer of the democratic health of our countries. They test, in short, the democratic muscles of our countries.

Today, the exercise of freedom of artistic expression in Latin America continues to have a high cost for those who dare to defend it in defective democracies and, even higher costs, in authoritarian contexts.

As a result of the encounter with the experiences gathered during these months, the initiative "Artists in exile" arises, a podcast produced entirely by CADAL, focused on the uprooting of Latin American artists, managers and creators. They are stories that tell, in first person, what it means to be forced to leave the country of origin indefinitely, for reasons of political harassment and censorship.

“Artists in Exile” shows that forced exile is another form of violence in Latin America. We invite you to join us. Turn up the volume and let the repression lose the game.
