Mercosur: Balance and Perspectives

The political scientist Romeo Pérez Antón was the guest speaker at the latest meeting of Foro Latinoamericano Buenos Aires, which took place in CADAL’s headquarters. On this occasion, the Uruguayan academic analyzed the situation of MERCOSUR since the crisis of the block’s disintegration (1999-2012), the frustrated attempts at structural renewal and the meaning of the recient Mendoza Summit.

The political scientist Romeo Pérez Antón was the guest speaker at the latest meeting of Foro Latinoamericano Buenos Aires, which took place in CADAL's headquarters. On this occasion, the Uruguayan academic analyzed the situation of MERCOSUR since the crisis of the block's disintegration  (1999-2012), the frustrated attempts at structural renewal and the meaning of the recient Mendoza Summit.

The Foro was sponsored by the Konrad Adenauer Foundation and was attended by various representatives of Argentina's foreign diplomatic body, including the embassadors of New Zealand and the Netherlands.

Romeo Pérez Antón (Montevideo, 1943) has a doctorate degree in Law and Social Sciences (Universidad de la República, Uruguay). He is a researcher and a teacher of political science, specializing in Uruguayan parties, foreign policy, and political theory and its applications. In addition, he is a professor at Universidad de la República, Universidad Católica del Uruguay, Universidad de la República, and the Centro Latinoamericano de Economía Humana (CLAEH), where he is also the Chairman. Furthermore, Antón is a professor and lecturer in various universities in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, the United States, Spain, France, Portugal, and Belgium, and a consultant for the Organization of American States, the United Nations Development Program, and the European Union. His publications include "El Proceso de Toma de Decisiones en el Mercosur," "Mercosur: Desafío Político," and "Política Exterior Uruguaya del Siglo XX." Finally, he is a member of CADAL's Academic Council.
