CADAL participates in «Socialism, populism, and democracy in Latin America» conference

Juan Pablo Cardenal, an associated researcher at CADAL and author of “China’s ‘sharp power’ in Latin America and the Argentinian case,” participated in a panel with author Mario Vargas Llosa, former Bolivian president Jorge Quiroga, and Venezuelan activist Tamara Sujú.

The “Socialism, populism, and democracy in Latin America” conference took place at the Universidad Católica de Chile. The conference was organized by the Chile-based Fundación para el Progreso and Czech-based Forum 2000.

Opening remarks were given by Chilean Minister of Foreign Affairs, Roberto Ampuero; former Costa Rican president Oscar Arias; Dean of the Universidad Católica de Chile, Ignacio Sánchez Díaz; and Executive Director of Forum 2000, Jakub Klepal.

The first panel, “Latin America 2018: A Panorama,” offered “an analysis of the current regional context, with an emphasis on the most critical cases.” The panelists included Nobel Literature Laureate Mario Vargas Llosa; former Bolivian president Jorge Quiroga; Venezuelan activist Tamara Sujú; and CADAL associated researcher Juan Pablo Cardenal. Axel Kaiser, Director of Fundación para el Progreso moderated the panel.

The second panel, “Latin America: Expectations and Outcomes” included Cuban activist Rosa María Payá, former Chilean Minister of Education Mariana Aylwin, former mayor of Caracas Antonio Ledezma, Peruvian author and intellectual Álvaro Vargas Llosa, and Chilean representative to the Red de Jóvenes por la Democracia, Francisco Ramírez Gómez.
