D20 Conference on the International Day of Democracy
The alternative conference to the T20, “The G20 and Challenges to the Globalization of Democracy,” took place in the auditorium of the University of CEMA. Speakers included Luis Alberto Romero, Loris Zanatta, Norma Morandini, Rosa María Payá, Rodrigo Diamanti, Raúl Ferro, Leandro Querido, and Gabriel Salvia.
The event was organized by CADAL, Transparencia Electoral, Cuba Decide, and the Venezuelan NGO Sin Mordaza.
The first panel, “Economic Development without Democracy?” was moderated by Sybil Rhodes, Chairwoman of CADAL and Director of the Department of Political Science and International Relations at UCEMA. Panelists included historians Luis Alberto Romero and Loris Zanatta, journalist Raúl Ferro, and political scientist Leandro Querido.
The second panel, “The Universal Declaration of Democracy and International Solidarity for the Defense of Human Rights,” was moderated by Irene Caballero, Interim Representative of Uruguay, and included presentations by Rosa María Payá, director of Cuba Decide; Norma Morandini, journalist and head of the Center of Human Rights of the National Senate of Argentina; Rodrigo Diamanti, head of the Venezuelan NGO Sin Mordaza; and Gabriel Salvia, General Director of CADAL.
