Between the Ditches and the Walls

CADAL, the National Arts Fund, the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Buenos Aires, the Czech organisation Post Bellum, and the Czech Cultural Centre in Argentina organised a screening of the documentary directed by Viktor Portel at Casa Victoria Ocampo, on International Holocaust Remembrance Day.

No place in the Czech Republic bears the mark of the Holocaust as deeply as Terezín. A lone traveller walks through its streets, encountering local residents who prefer to leave the past behind; after all, it was “only four years”. Yet as the former ghetto fades from memory, forgetting has done little to revitalise the town. Why has Terezín become a ghost town? And to what extent does its desolate present reflect our broader relationship with Jewish history and memory?

The opening remarks were delivered by Tulio Andreussi Guzmán, President of the National Arts Fund; Gabriel Salvia, Executive Director of CADAL; and Filip Kanda, Deputy Head of Mission at the Embassy of the Czech Republic.
