Cuban activist Carolina Barrero visited the Southern Cone

Invited by CADAL, the art historian and human rights defender forced into exile, visited Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay and Chile between June 12 and July 3.

Within the framework of the first anniversary of the 11J protests in Cuba, Barrero gave presentations and interviews in Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Montevideo, Buenos Aires, Rosario and Santiago de Chile. She also held meetings with political, intellectual, cultural and civil society leaders.

On Tuesday, June 14, she participated as speaker in a conference at CADAL's headquarters on "Charter 77 and its validity in Cuba" together with historian Ricardo López Göttig and the ambassador of the Czech Republic in Argentina, Lubomír Hladík.

Also on Tuesday 14, Barrero held a meeting with young National Deputies of Argentina: Francisco Monti (UCR, Catamarca), Sebastián Salvador (UCR, province of Buenos Aires), Juan Martín (UCR, Santa Fe), Florencia Klipauka (PRO, Misiones), Martín Arjol (UCR, Misiones) and Martín Berhongaray (Evolución Radical, La Pampa).

From June 15 to 20 Carolina Barrero visited Brazil, where she was interviewed by the main newspapers of the country, and held a meeting with human rights activist Jorge Santana.

On Monday 20, the Fernando Henrique Cardoso Foundation and CADAL organized the conference "Art and resistance in Cuba: the history of a citizen's uprising", with Carolina Barrero as speaker. The meeting was moderated by Sergio Fausto and was held at the São Paulo headquarters of the Foundation named after the former President of Brazil.

On Wednesday 22, the Cuban activist met at the Congress of Uruguay with vice president Beatriz Argimón and the speaker of the House of Representatives Ope Pasquet.

On the evening of June 22, Carolina participated in a meeting with parliamentarians, journalists and political scientists at the headquarters of CERES, Uruguay's main think tank, convened by Ignacio Munyo and Nelson Fernández.

On Thursday, June 23, Barrero participated as a speaker in the conference "One Year after 9/11: Art and Resistance in Cuba" together with Tamara Taraciuk Broner, Acting Director for the Americas of Human Rights Watch; Gloria Rodríguez, Senator of Uruguay; and Matilde Antía, Mayor of the Municipality CH of Montevideo. The event was held at the Congress of Uruguay.

On Saturday 25th Carolina Barrero together with the Colombian journalist Julián Martínez and his partner, visited the International Museum of Democracy in the city of Rosario. They were received by its director, Rubén Chababo, also academic advisor of CADAL.

On the night of the 25th, Carolina attended a presentation in Rosario of Atemporal Trío, a Cuban acoustic music group from the town of Bejucal, in the province of Mayabeque, 25 kilometers from Havana. One of its members, Mario Miguel Piña, was detained for ten days for having participated in the 11J protests.

On Tuesday 28, the Cuban art historian was received by authorities and special guests at the Patricio Aylwin Foundation .

On the evening of the 28th, Carolina Barrero was honored by the cultural referent Rodrigo Castillo and his wife, a Cuban doctor, in a true meeting of democracy that brought together forty people of different political ideas, including artists, politicians and journalists.

On Wednesday 29th, Barrero held a meeting with two of Chile's leading progressive leaders, Sergio Bitar and Ricardo Brodsky. Bitar was minister during the presidencies of Salvador Allende, Ricardo Lagos and Michelle Bachelet, and was a political prisoner during the military dictatorship of Pinochet. Brodsky was ambassador of Chile in Brussels and director of the Museum of Memory in Santiago.

On the afternoon of Wednesday 29th, Carolina Barrero participated in a discussion that took place in the auditorium of the Central House of the Gabriela Mistral University and was attended by forty academics from this university. This instance counted with a panel that accompanied the Cuban art history graduate, composed by Mariana Aylwin, president of the Board of Directors of UGM; Sergio Mena, dean of the House of Studies, and Gabriel Salvia, general director of CADAL.

During her visit to the Southern Cone, the Cuban activist received important media coverage. While in Los Angeles during the Summit of the Americas, she was interviewed by Infobae and La Nación, from Buenos Aires. While in the Argentine capital, she participated in Radio Mitre in El Pase between journalists Jorge Lanata and Eduardo Feinmann, and was interviewed in La Nación +, and in the city of Rosario, by the newspaper La Capital. In Brazil she was interviewed by the newspapers Folha de San Pablo and O Globo, and on Bandeirantes TV and TV Cultura. In Montevideo she was interviewed by the newspaper El País, el Canal 10 and the radio programs En Perspectiva, Fácil desviarse and 12 PM. In Santiago de Chile, Carolina was interviewed by the newspaper La Tercera, the portal El Dínamo and the radio program Pauta B.

Carolina Barrero

Carolina Barrero is an art historian, human rights defender and activist for the end of violence and authoritarianism, for peace and respect for civil and political rights. She was part of the protest movement that challenged Cuba's totalitarian regime in 2021 as a member of the 27N movement. Previously, she worked in art galleries in Madrid, including Travesía Cuatro and Elba Benítez, and at the Wilfredo Lam Contemporary Art Center in Havana, Cuba. She holds an MBA in Cultural Institutions and Enterprises from the Universidad Complutense de Madrid and was a fellow at the Museo del Prado. She has published articles in numerous magazines and newspapers, such as Artishock, The Art Newspaper, El Estornudo, Rialta and Hypermedia Magazine.
