Latin America: Towards a new social contract

In the framework of the agreement that CADAL has with Bertelsmann Stiftung since 2014, and as part of the diffusion of the Bertelsmann Transformation Index (BTI), the virtual conference ''Latin America: Towards a new social contract'' was held. The online meeting -now available at CADAL TV- was held live through Zoom, lasted one hour, featured the presentation of four specialists, summoned more than one hundred people and offered the chance for questions from the audience.

CADAL organized, together with Bertelsmann Stiftung, Bertelsmann Foundation North America and Chatham House, the virtual conference "Latin America: Towards a new social contract". During the meeting, the state of democracies in the region and the challenges faced by States and societies during and after the crisis generated by Covid-19 were analyzed.

Viviana Giacaman

The activity included the presentation of Viviana Giacaman (United Nations, Chile), CADAL's advisory counselors Christopher Sabatini (Chatham House, United Kingdom) and Hauke Hartmann (Bertelsmann Stiftung, Germany), and Peter Thiery (Heidelberg University and Bertelsmann Stiftung, Germany). Moderated by Samuel George (Global Markets and Digital Adviser, Bertelsmann Foundation, United States).

Christopher Sabatini

The prospects for democratic recovery, the erosion of statehood and the decline in the approval of democracy as a result of corruption and social exclusion were discussed. As Hartmann pointed out, this exchange was based on an analysis that does not speak "about" the realities of the region, but rather "from", thanks to the work of the specialists who carried out the research in each country.

The meeting was held through Zoom platform and was attended by a diverse and international audience. More than 100 people from Argentina, Belgium, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Chile, Ecuador, Germany, Honduras, Kenya, Mexico, Norway, Panama, Romania, Spain, United Kingdom and United States participated. At the end of the specialists' presentations, a space was set up for questions from the audience.

The virtual conference "Latin America: Towards a new social contract" is available at CADAL TV. At CADAL's website there is free access to articles and reports linked to the results obtained from BTI. Besides, the whole BTI research is available through the Bertelsmann Stiftung's website.
