Justice as esence of democracy

With the sponsorship of Swiss Embassy in Uruguay, CADAL organized the presentation of issue 24 of Perspectiva magazine, to deal with its dossier subject ''Justice as esence of democracy''. The event took place at Palacio Legislativo of Uruguay with the participation of Esteban Pérez, National Representative (MPP/FA); Carlos Moreira, National Senator (Partido Nacional); Gustavo Espinosa, National Representative (Partido Colorado); Mariela Gilet, in representation of Parlamentary Penitentiary Commissioner; Eduardo Pesce, attorney (Montevideo); and Diego Camaño, Professor of Criminal Law (UDELAR). The opening of the activity was in charge of Hans-Ruedi Bortis, Swiss Ambassador in Uruguay.

The opening of the activity was in charge of Hans-Ruedi Bortis, Swiss Ambassador in Uruguay.

On his turn, Gabriel Salvia, Chairman of the Center for the Opening and Development of Latin America (CADAL) and member of the Editorial Council of Perspectiva Magazine, welcomed the participants who received a free copy of the book “Reforma al Sistema Penal y Carcelario en el Uruguay”. The magazine is edited in Colombia by Instituto de Ciencia Política, with the support of Center for International Private Enterprise in the United States and the collaboration of a network of institutes in different countries of the region. CADAL represents Perspectiva magazine in Uruguay, being in charge of its launching, distribution and promotion in that country. In this issue, to analyze the Dossier's subject, Perspectiva summoned different experts such as: Fernando Carrillo, former Minister of Justice of Colombia; Claudio Grossman, Dean of Law College at American University, twice president of the Inter-American Commission of Human Rights; Adriana Ruiz-Restrepo, director of RRA (Derecho Público + Innovación Social); Christopher Sabatini, Director of Politicis Americas Society/Council of the Americas, Editor in Chief of Americas Quarterly; Adriana María Polanía, Colombian Lawyer, General director of Inter-American Commercial Arbitration Commission; Luis Paulino Mora, Chairman of the Supreme Court of Costa Rica; Gloria María Borrero Restrepo, Executive director of Corporación Excelencia en la Justicia (CEJ); Guillermo Lousteau Heguy, ARgentine philosopher, Ph. D. in Law and constitutionalist; Orlando T. Gómez González, Cuban Lawyer, Ph. D. in Law and professor of Criminal Law; Humberto de la Calle, former Minister of Interior, former Ambassador and Vicepresident of Colombia; Andrea Rondón, Venezuela lawyer, expert in corporate lawM and Luis A. Herrera, Venezuelan lawyer expert in administrative law. CADAL gathered for the subject the Uruguaian jurist Diego Camaño Viera, deputy professor of Criminal Law at Universidad de la República, member of the Executive Council of Instituto de Estudios Legales y Sociales (Ielsur), who analyzes the “Deficits of Criminal Justice in Uruguay”; and in the books section, Adrian Lucardi, Associated Research of CADAL, reviews the book “Populismo o mercados. El dilema de América Latina”, by Sebastián Edwards.
