Zoé Valdés: Literature and Politics

Zoé Valdés, writer, filmmaker, painter, journalist and editor, gave a presentation on the strong nexus between literature and politics, its role in the democratization process and the current situation and possible future scenarios in Cuba.

With Zoé Valdés as a guest speaker, CADAL and the Konrad Adenauer Foundation held a conference on literature and politics in the office of the German foundation.

Zoé Valdés  (Havana, 1959), is writer, filmmaker, painter, journalist and editor. Chévalier des Arts et des Lettres de France, Médaille Vermeil de la Ville de Paris. Awarded in Spain for several of her books, which were translated into more than twenty languages. Winner of the Premio Finalista Planeta, Premio Fernando Lara de Novela Histórica, Premio Juan March Cencillo de Novela, Premio Ciudad de Torrevieja de Novela, Premio Azorín de Novela. Jury member of the Festival in Cannes of 1998. Jury member of some film and literary festivals and events. She was assistant director of the magazine Cine Cubano from 1990 to 1994. In the nineties she was chief editor of the Ars Magazine, and at the moment she holds this position of the magazine “Ars Atelier City”. She has been guest of honor in several fairs and festivals, lecturer in universities around the world and in libraries of prestige. In 1999 she was awarded with the Orden de Chévalier de las Artes y las Letras, the highest award granted by the Ministry of Culture and Communication of France.

After welcoming words by Dra. Kristin Wesemann, representative of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation in Argentina, Valdés gave a presentation on the strong nexus between literature and politics, its role in the democratization process and the actual situation and possible future scenarios in Cuba.

Zoé Valdés: "It would be wrong to lift the trade embargo against Cuba"

The Cuban writer Zoé Valdés says that it would be a mistake if the US lifted its trade embargo against Cuba. Furthermore, she asks for the Castro brother to be brought before court because of the violation of Human Rights.
