Argentina and its regional and international reintegration

From the 14 to 30 of June,2016 CADAL in collaboration with Fundación Konrad Adenauer organized six seminars on ''The reintegration of Argentina in regional and international politics''. The seminars were moderated by Sybil Rhodes and speakers were Juan Battaleme, Jorge Elias, Alejandro Rebossio, Guido Nejamkis, Danilo Trupkin, Carlos Gervasoni, Federico Merke, Marcelo Elizondo, Jorge Castro, Rodolfo Caffaro Kramer, Föhrig Alberto and Luis Maria Palma.

The seminar was held at the headquarters of CADAL and the issues discussed were the following: the role of Argentina in the new global context: wars, refugees, terrorism; normalization of political and economic ties with the United States; The future of Mercosur and the impact of the crisis on Brazil ; The new regional context: Democracy and human rights in Latin America in the face of change in political paradigm; Openness to international trade: Pacific Alliance, the European Union, ASEAN, China and Russia; and Drug Trafficking, justice and security on the agenda of regional bodies.

The seminar began on Tuesday, June 14 with a presentation by Juan Battaleme on "The role of Argentina in the new global context: wars, refugees, terrorism."

Juan Battaleme holds a degree in Political Science from UBA, Masters in International Relations from FLACSO, Masters in State Sciences from UCEMA. He is the Director of the College of Government and International Relations at UADE, Fulbright and Chevening Scholarship. CARI member Consultant and member of the IISS. Specialist in International Relations, International Security and National Defense. Author of numerous academic and journalistic articles in La Nacion, Clarin, Perfil, DEF, Cronista among others.

On Thursday June 16, journalists Jorge Elias and Alejandro Rebossio gave presentations on the "normalization of political and economic ties with the United States"

Jorge Elias is a journalist in Radio Continental and Televisión Pública Argentina; he is in charge of the international information and analysis portal: El Ínterin and collaborates with media outlets in Argentina and abroad. He worked for 25 years in the newspaper La Nacion. He was a correspondent in the United States, Mexico and Canada. He covered elections, conflicts, wars and various events in several countries. He conducted interviews with more than sixty leaders. He also investigated crimes against journalists for Inter-American Press Society.

Alejandro Rebossio is a journalist with specialization in economics. He is correspondent for the German television channel Deutsche Welle (DW) and analyst for the Italian magazine Internazionale. He also writes for La Nación, where he was the head of the Sunday economic section. He also works with the magazine Anfibia. He is coauthor of the books “Estoy verde. Dólar, una pasión argentina” (Aguilar) and “Vaca Muerta” (Planeta).

On Tuesday June 21, Guido Nejamkis and Danilo Trupkin gave a talk on "The future of Mercosur and the impact of the crisis in Brazil."

Danilo Trupkin is the Director of Macroeconomic Studies of the Ministry of Labor, Employment and Social Security, and professor at Universidad de Buenos Aires, CEMA, New York University (Buenos Aires) and Universidad de Montevideo. He has a Ph.D. in economics from Texas A&M University, Masters in Economics from Universidad Torcuato Di Tella, and Bachelors in Economics from Universidad de Buenos Aires.

On Thursday June 23, Federico Merke and Carlos Gervasoni gave a presentation on the new regional context : "Democracy and human rights in Latin America in the face of the change in political paradigm."

Carlos Gervasoni is Research Professor in the Department of Political Science and International Studies at Universidad Torcuato Di Tella and member of Varieties of Democracy project. He earned a master's degree in political science at Stanford University, and a doctorate at University of Notre Dame. He specialized in the studies of democracy, provincial policy, public opinion and research methodology . He is Academic Director of the Center for the Opening and Development of Latin America (CADAL).

Federico Merke is Director of degrees in Political Science and International Relations at Universidad de San Andrés. He is also a researcher at CONICET. He studied International Relations at Universidad del Salvador, has a Master of Arts in International Studies from the University of Warwick (UK) and a PhD in Social Sciences at FLACSO, Buenos Aires. He was a Scholar at the British Chevening Council and Ibero- Amerikanisches Institut (Berlin). Until 2009 he was the Academic Coordinator of Consejo Argentino para las Relaciones Internacionales.

On Tuesday June 28, Marcelo Elizondo, Jorge Castro and Rodolfo Caffaro Kramer gave a talk on "The opening to international trade: the Pacific Alliance, the European Union, ASEAN , China and Russia."

Marcelo Elizondo has a Masters degree in Business Administration (Universidad Politécnica de Madrid). He is a Lawyer (UBA) and a Professor of international economy and global markets at ITBA and UCA. He is the Director General of the consulting company "Desarrollo de Negocios Internacionales -DNI-", the President of the Argentine Chapter of the International Society for Performance Improvement (ISPI) . Former executive director of the Foundation ExportAr, President of la Red Iberoamericana de organismos de Promoción de exportaciones y former member of IATTO (International Association for Trade Training Organizations).

Jorge Castro is the President of Instituto de Planeamiento Estratégico de Argentina.He is a Lawyer and a journalist. An International policy analyst for the newspapers Clarín, Perfil and La Nación; former Deputy Director of the newspaper El Cronista; former Secretary of strategic planning at Argentina’s Executive Branch (1998-1999); University lecturer and panelist at various universities in Latin America, Rome (NATO) and other institutions; he was honoured by the Federal Republic of Brazil and Chile. He is a member of Consejo Argentino para las Relaciones Internacionales (CARI).

Rodolfo Caffaro Kramer is President of Cámara de Comercio birregional MERCOSUR ASEAN (MACC). He is a Lawyer (UBA). He has a Doctorate of Air and Space Law . Graduate degree in Arbitration and International Law at the University of Köln, Germany. He is a Professor of Maritime Law, Aviation and Satellite in the UBA. Lawyer for the Embassies of Germany and Indonesia in Argentina. Participant of Asean conference “Latin America Business Forum 2012” in Jakarta, Indonesia. Speaker at “Foro Empresarial América Latina-Asia Pacífico. La ASEAN, un nuevo mercado para el Futuro” Lima, 2015.

The final seminar was held on Thursday June 30. Föhrig Alberto and Luis Maria Palma spoke on "Drug trafficking, justice and security on the agenda of regional organizations".

Alberto Föhrig is Professor of Political Science at Universidad de San Andrés. He studied Law at Universidad de Buenos Aires and a BA in International Relations from Universidad de Belgrano. He earned his MA in Latin American Studies at Georgetown University and a PhD in Political Science at the University of Oxford. He completed his post- doctorate at the Universities of Yale and Harvard with a scholarship program on Drugs, Security and Democracy from the Social Science Research Council. He currently serves as Assistant Secretary for Planning and Training of the Ministry of National Security.

Luis Maria Palma is the Director of the International Institute for Justice Excellence (IIJE). President of E-Justicia Latinoamérica. Vice President of the International Association for Court Administration (IACA) . Dean of the Faculty of Graduate Studies (Universidad de Belgrano -UB) . Director of Centro de Estudios sobre la Justicia (Universidad de Buenos Aires–UBA). A Lawyer with a Doctorate in Political Science (UB) and Sociology (UB ). Postdoctorate degree in Law (Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Paraná, -PUCPR, Curitiba, Brazil), Former General Coordinator (Hon) of Comisión Nacional de Gestión Judicial (Argentine Supreme Court).

The six -day seminar were moderated by Sybil Rhodes, Director of the Master in International Studies (UCEMA) and Vice President of the Center for the Opening and Development of Latin America (CADAL). She has a Ph.D. and MA. in Political Science (Stanford University) .
